CHAPTER SEVEN

LITHO TAKES

A TRAIN

The wail of additional ambulances and fire trucks shattered the hush that has beset the scene. The air is heavy with dust from the collapsed building as the crowd of onlookers starts to grow and the Chicago Fire and Police Department arrives on the scene. Marshal and a mass of pizza toppings answering to the name of Brandy Holmes climb into the back of an army deuce and a half and are unceremoniously whisked away.

The firefighters fan out as uniform police start pushing back the crowd. A police sergeant who has just arrived asks two teenage boys, “What happened here?”

“The building just exploded!” answered one boy; his friend chimed in saying, “There were some aliens inside and then this girl went in.”

A Chinese girl in a News Six blazer and her cameraman come up behind the sergeant unseen, and start recording. “What happened next?” he asked.

“WHAM! The whole building went up! Or rather it came tumbling down.” The kid was hamming it up for the cameras.

His friend, not wanting to let his fifteen minutes of fame get away, added, “After the smoke cleared, they came out. And she took off running down the street chasing one of the aliens.”

This caught the officer's attention. “What did she look like?”

“Uh … She had on an army uniform but I didn't get a good look at her. She was all covered with pizza.”

“You didn't get a good look at her because she was covered with pizza? Is that right?” the sergeant sarcastically repeated.

“Yeah! That's right. You couldn't see much, but by the way she filled out that uniform, she was definitely a major babe!”

A female voice came from the other side said, “Yeah, that's right, and there was this big blue alien. He saved my life.” The sergeant turned to see Ruby, the black girl who had been saved by Marshal, being attended to by EMTs.

This was getting to be too much for the police officer to believe. “A big blue alien saved your life. Just how did he do that?”

She hesitated before answering. “Uhh, I don't know! I was trapped under the wall and I couldn't breathe. The next thing I know, he's pulling me out and tearing my blouse off.”

“He raped you?” he interrupted.

“Naw man, nothin’ like that. After he got my top off, he takes off his coat and this major babe puts it on me. And I got better.”

“What happened after that?” he asked, half fearing the answer.

“He ran off down the street,” she answered.

“Then where's this magical coat?” He thought he had caught her in a lie.

“He came back for it. You can ask the paramedics. They saw him,” she replied, as they nodded in agreement.

The sergeant pushed his cap back with his pencil and was pondering his notes as the detective came up to him, asking, “Did you get anything useful?”

“Naw, lieutenant, I think they're all in shock or somethin’. They all had some cock-and-bull story about aliens. If you ask me, it was a meth lab or something,” the sergeant offered his opinion.
